Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book

Why do seagulls fly over the sea?

Because if they flew over the bay they would be called bagels….

I didn’t have an intro for this post, so that was an awful pun from the internet… I REGRET NOTHING.

DRAGONS (and other mythical creatures). I’m not even a big fan of fantasy, but if I see a dragon, unicorn, wrym, or griffin on the book’s cover or mentioned in the blurb, you better believe that book is coming home with me!

Pretty covers/aesthetically pleasing covers. I know covers aren’t everything, but I AM A PETTY BOOK DRAGON. I still pick up books with ugly covers and end up enjoying them, but I definitely notice pretty books first and suddenly want them for my own….

Helloooo, beautiful ones! I like to think of my pettiness towards book covers as people’s pettiness for people; we all know that it’s the inside that really matters, but that doesn’t stop us from sitting back and thinking, “dang, that’s fine” when we see one that looks like a super model.

Peer pressure. If any of my friends online or offline keep bringing up a book, chances are I’m going to read it.

I’m currently reading The Raven Boysbecause of some of my friends on gr and I don’t know what my life is anymore… *melts into a pile of feels* Gansey, Adam, Noah, and Ronan are MY CHILDREN NOW, OKAY?? I’m adopting Noah Czerny because he is just a precious little cinnamon roll and YOU BETTER NOT HURT HIM, MAGGIE!!! *ahem* Moving on….

Controversy.  I’m the kind of person who sees a Don’t Touch sign and immediately wants to poke whatever I shouldn't  touch, so if I see a book that has low ratings or that my friends dislike it, or if it's super political, I’m probably going to read it, because I’m stupidbecause I am awesome like that and possibly hardheaded….possibly.

Platonic !!! relationships !!! Although I do like romance now and then and I enjoy shipping characters, I also love, love, LOVE books that focus on other kinds of relationships other than love or the typical YA puppy-love/lust. We especially need more guy and girl platonic friendships in the media!

Even a few days ago a girl told me that there is no way I could remain “just friends” with a friend of mine because, “guys and girls can’t be just friends”…. I do hope people that are under that impression are aware of the fact that most peeps have more than one friend of the opposite gender… I can barely even support my emotions right now not to mention my ten + other guy friends’ hardships, yikes, no.

Beautiful writing style. I positively ADORE stories with a more poetic or gothic style. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness wasn’t only heart-shattering, it was so gorgeously and painfully written, that I fell in love immediately.

Coffee shops/aesthetic. We need more coffee shop scenes in books because they are just precious and who doesn’t love the whole quaint coffee shop vibe for goodness sakes?! (Also I love coffee so I love reading/writing about it).

What makes you pick up a book?

Happy Writing,
